The shifter linkage broke after exiting a roundabout while driving to work this morning.

Kinja'd!!!

I noticed it when I tried to go from 3rd to 4th, the shifter had absolutely no resistance, and obviously wouldn’t shift. I was about 500m away from work.
Luckily, I came to work an hour earlier than usual, so there was no traffic at all and I didn’t have to hunt for a parking spot.
I managed to go through 2 traffic lights by managing timing, throttle and clutch, turned into the parking lot, found a spot and let it roll in perfectly next to the Audi, no second chance.
I called my parents so we can tow it home this evening. the fun part will be to crawl in the wet dirt to get the transmission into neutral.
I feel betrayed.

[Update] my dad jacked the car up, tightened the link, put it back in place, and I could drive home. And now I feel ashamed I haven’t done it myself. I didn’t feel like getting under the car held by the scissor jack alone.

How can the mighty 505 let you down? I’m guessing the EVOLUTION sticker doesn’t refer to the improved shifter linkage...

If the bottom pic, then no as I love me ancient keyboards and that one is on my spare desktop :P

If one of the bottom ones in the second pic, then sure...you’ve got an Acer and a Dell to pick from! :D

It still has to beat the Audi, 3 times stranded in one year with a 80.000 km car. At least the Pug has an excuse :)

The linkage seems have couple of small ball joints. Maybe one of these popped out? Easy fix with a zip tie?

I broke down about 10 times in two and half hours in the LT last week. I had to jam the throttle cable so it stayed at certain revs (perfect air/fuel mix!) and drive it back without the accelerator pedal. I covered about 4km in total.

That’s an awfully good first thing to check... Might make for an easier exit to the parking lot, at least.

Hey, it still rolled into the lot - it technically didn’t leave you stranded.

Yeah i suspect those ball joints too, I’ll give it a try after work, but I don’t want to go under the car in the darkness with a wonky jack on loose ground
My parents will bring something more solid to lift the car, if I can fix it then and there, I drive it home, if not, I pop it out of gear and tow it home.

I wouldn’t be too scared to drive it like that, but I don’t know if I have enough access to repair it on the spot

True :)

And it should be an easy fix you could do with some wire

I am interested how you’re going to fix this in the long term. I’m trying to find as many new replacements of those  little ball joints and other wear items in the shift linkage of my 205, as a means of preventative maintenance. I bet it’ll make it shift better too.

After replacing a shift rod in my €300 ‘86 205 (old one was held on by a bicycle inner tube) and replacing the shift cables in my 406 (shifts like new now!) I’ve become convinced it makes sense to work on these things in advance of failure of the parts.

To be honest: good question!

I still have some spare links for the GTD, even though those are old too. But I only have one for the V6, from the red parts car I got last year, and I don’t know what shape it is in. I checked several online shops, and they seem to be out of stock everywhere. I’ll possibly have to build something. I was thinking about taking the old rod, cutting the heads, tapping the ends of the rod, and put one of these on it:

For the 205 I was able to find parts numbers. Couldn’t find the parts anywhere online though, but the Peugeot dealer could actually supply me with half. For peanuts. While my ‘87 205 isn’t newer than your 505s it does have the advantage of being built for a few years longer though. But my point being: source parts numbers and possibly the technical drawing (is the 505 on Peugeot Service Box?) and go to a random peugeot dealer with a parts counter.

I think the part number is 2452.26, but the parts counter guys in the Peugeot dealers around me are pretty lazy, or at least, they give up quickly.
The servicebox entry on the 505 is merely scanned old paper catalog pages

I found this for the 205. It’s in Dutch but you’ll understand the image. They describe that you have to replace the parts with the red arrows and lubricate at the green ones. You might be able to do something similar for the 505.
